On holiday to the rain

I've experienced it often enough: bad weather on holiday. From a rainy week in the Dominican Republic and swimming under a closed roof on a cruise ship to thunderstorms during a party in Ibiza and missing the hotspot in Zakynthos due to too much wind. There are worse things, but the weather I often get on holiday is something you don't want.

Sometimes it seems like the destination in question knows exactly when I'm coming. Weeks before my departure, the weather is beautiful. As soon as my plane lands, it starts drizzling. I must say, though, that the summer holiday always goes well. The autumn holiday, on the other hand, is always a bit of a gamble.

What is the best holiday destination?

Of course, you don't want to fly too far if you're only going away for a week. So, you quickly end up choosing a destination that's about 2 to 3 hours away by plane. You know that it can be a bit cooler there in October. Generally, it's usually sunny during the day in places like Spain or Portugal. But you can also have really bad luck during your autumn holiday. So, each time you just hope that it stays as dry as possible.

Visiting villages during the autumn holiday

Fortunately, there are usually some fun things to do nearby if the weather isn't great for a day. You can visit a beautiful city or a lovely village, go to a cool amusement park, or go shopping. But let's be honest, even that's not fun or sometimes even doable if it's pouring rain.

If you prefer not to take any risks, book last-minute. The best spots might be taken, but at least you won't have to worry about being stuck in your apartment or hotel room all week. If you prefer to book well in advance, choose a place with more facilities available. Should the weather turn really bad, you can at least go to the spa or make friends at the lobby bar.
